Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was a German-American architect and designer, founder of the International Style and the last director of the Bauhaus before its closure in 1933. After emigrating to the United States in 1937, he led the Illinois Institute of Technology architecture department and shaped twentieth-century architecture with projects including the Barcelona Pavilion (1929), the Farnsworth House and the Seagram Building.His furniture designs — the Barcelona Chair (1929), the MR Chair, the Brno Chair — are produced under license by Knoll.
